Visit Peebles - The Royal Burgh

Old Townhouse (c.1753)

High Street, Peebles

The Old Town House was an early administrative centre for the town. The building has two fine elliptical arches and a tympanum at roof level which features a carved shield bearing the Burgh arms - but with the fish the wrong way round !

During the Napoleonic war, French officer prisoners on paroile were billeted in the town and used the upper room as a theatre.
