The committee of Peebles Christmas Lights Association is a small group of volunteers who give up their time to light up the town every Christmas. All the work done is by a committed team of 10 in total who each year maintain, refurbish and erect the lights and also work hard fundraising to make sure the lights display develops and improves. We are always looking to add and build on our lights display each year which is enjoyed on a whole by young and old.
The Association relies on many groups, organisations and residents, including the Gutterbluids, Callants, Ex Cornets, Beltane, Rugby Club, Ex-Servicemen’s’ Club, who provide manpower at peak times in December & January, and facilities for fundraising and maintenance throughout the year. The Association appreciates their invaluable assistance and facilities.
The big night of the Christmas Lights Switch on the first Thursday of December sees the High Street closed for market stalls, funfair rides, late night shopping, entertainment from Peebles Burgh Silver Band and Peebles Ex-Servicemen’s Pipe Band along with other entertainment provided by carol singers, Parish Church Bells and INChorus.
The highlight is the big switch on which is heralded by the arrival of a sleigh with the Beltane Queen and Santa Claus on board, escorted by the pipe band. Following the countdown at 7.30 these two well kent persons start the switch on procedure from the Tontine steps.
