Founded in 1880 as The Peeblesshire News and County Advertiser. In 1916 it absorbed a smaller Innerleithen publication, The St Ronan’s Standard and Effective Advertiser, which had been founded in 1893 but had to close because of the shortage of skilled staff caused by Great War conscription. (The Standard‘s printworks, R. Smail and Sons, survives today as a National Trust for Scotland property open to the public.)
